The early months of each year in the Triad always bring a chance of snow and ice. Particularly in our area, ice tends to be a more common problem than snow, and can be very dangerous to walk or drive on.

To combat ice, many use ice melting products on driveways and walkways. But did you know that many of these products are potentially harmful if not used correctly? Here are some important precautions to take that will save your concrete, lawn, plants, and pets.

Do not over apply, follow instructions on the label.

Do not try to melt everything. Clear snow first.

Wear gloves. Ice melts are an irritant.

Do not use on new concrete that has not fully cured.

All products have some effect on the environment. Flush area with water if over-use is suspected or damage appears on plants.

Also realize that all ice melting products are not created equally. You may even decide to use sand as an alternative. Sand won’t melt the ice, but it will create traction on icy surfaces, making it safer to drive and walk on and spare your concrete, and the environment, from potential harm.

We found a great article that outlines different categories of ice melting products, as well as more environmentally-friendly alternatives. You can read it in its entirety at: http://lawncare.about.com/od/lawncarebasics/a/Ice_melt.htm

High Point, NC. December 20, 2010. J Douglas Homes was awarded Builder of the Year for 2010 by the High Point Area Builder’s Association. The award is presented annually to a home builder in the High Point area, and winners are determined by a vote from the membership.

Both divisions of J Douglas Homes saw success in 2010 despite the struggling housing industry. JDH’s renovation division completely remodeled a tornado-ravaged home off of Old Mill Rd., taking it from a dated, 80’s style house to a modern, transitional home with a second floor. The builder’s custom division, which designed a new series of floor plans this year, witnessed quick sales on all of its inventory homes, which sold within 5 weeks or less after completion.

J Douglas Homes President Joe Nottoli attributes his company’s success to the long list of included upgrades in the homes he builds. “Today’s buyers are looking for value. We deliver that to them with upgrades such as granite countertops, hardwood flooring, crown moulding and stainless steel appliances. These are included as a standard amenity in the homes we build, whereas most other builders would charge extra for them.” said Nottoli. “I am honored to receive this award. This was a good year for us, and we look forward to an even stronger year in 2011.”

With more than 16 years of experience, J Douglas Homes builds homes throughout the Piedmont Triad, ranging from 2000 to 5000 square feet, and priced from the mid-$100,000 range and up.

Our 18 years of experience in the home building industry has made us very aware of what new home buyers are looking for when evaluating floor plans. We have carefully designed five new floor plans that are based on the way people live today. Each plan is customizable and offers a number of features that are most desirable in new home construction.

We at J Douglas Homes pride ourselves on offering many standard features included in the price of your home, such as tile backsplashes, taller baseboards, and sodded front yards, that other builders would charge additionally for. It is our belief that these details make your home more aesthetically pleasing, and you shouldn’t have to pay extra for them.

We’d like to introduce you to the first of our five floor plans: The Emily. This home is a two-story with 4 bedrooms, 2.5 full baths, a bonus room, 9′ ceilings on the 1st floor, a formal living & dining room, a large family room, a kitchen with island, separate his/her closets, a tray ceiling in the master bedroom, and a 2 car garage. Options include adding a sunroom or screened-in porch, a fifth bedroom with bath, or a 3rd story bonus room.

We can build The Emily in either our Lindley Park Estates or Mendenhall Mill communities, or on your lot. For more information, please contact us at 336-454-3134.
